Giving Back: Wayside Waifs

I’m teaming up with a group of Kansas City bloggers to bring awareness to local non-profit groups.  These groups make our community a better place and are often in need of donations, volunteers, and just overall awareness.  I chose to focus on Wayside Waifs, Kansas City’s largest no kill pet adoption campus.

I've had pets since I could remember.  The first being a Sheltie named Sunshine and an African Gray parrot named Ziggy (now 33 years old).  We lived on an acreage so we also had goats, peacocks, ducks, cats (lots of cats), and dogs.   It’s safe to say my parents are HUGE animal lovers and that did rub off on my sister and me.  The dogs and cats that joined our family came from owners that couldn't keep the pet or from adoption centers.  It is such a great feeling to give a pet a new loving home and make them part of a family.  Because of my love of animals, Wayside Waifs struck a chord with me.
Wayside Waifs is Kansas City’s largest no kill pet adoption center.  They are committed to giving animals care until they find loving, forever homes.  Wayside Waifs knows that adopting a pet is a life-long commitment and is there every step of the way!

Here is a little breakdown of how new animals are welcomed to Wayside Waifs:
  • When a new pet arrives at Wayside Waifs they are treated in their very own Veterinary Clinic making sure they are healthy and spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before leaving.
  • To further prepare the pet for adoption, they are paired with a foster family who can love on the little guy/gal until ready for a forever home.
  • Once back at Wayside Waifs, the pet is evaluated by trained adoption counselors to determine the right home environment for their forever home.  Of course the pet is loved on by staff and kept in clean and cheerful kennels.
  • A lucky person will then adopt the sweet animal and take them to their forever home.
 But it doesn't end there!

Wayside Waifs has a Whiskers & Wags area for you to shop for all your pet supplies, or for the animal lover in your family.

A 5 acre, off-leash, Bark Park is also available to members to work off your dogs built up energy.  There is even a special area for smaller dogs and puppies.

Wayside Waifs will use adoption stories to teach Humane Education Programs, including a No More Bullies anti-violence program. More than 30,000 children in the Kansas City area will learn compassion, respect and responsibility through positive interaction with animals in the classroom.

This year Wayside Waifs will save more than 6,500 abandoned, abused and homeless animals.  How can you help?  There are many ways all of which are listed on their website.
